If you’ve spent at least 10 seconds on this site, you know I’m a HUGE fan of Video Copilot and their products. They’re having a 30%-off-everything sale for 10 days. If I didn’t already own all of their stuff, I would totally jump on this deal. All you have to do is enter the code “REAL30″ when you check out.

I would start off with Action Essentials 2, and Optical Flares.

hey this is great! is there a mode in the camera to take timelapses or did you take the shutter every 24 seconds?

    • http://www.pierceproductions.org/blog Brent Pierce

No, there is no built in mode to snap a picture in intervals. I used an intervalometer (remote timer) to set the interval and control when the shutter is opened.

thank you for the reply. so you could’t turn the shutter in video mode further down than 25fps? the panasonic gh1 can. i don’t know which one to buy and that could be an advantage to the gh1… do you know the gh1? which of the two cams would you prefer for cinematic shots?

        • http://www.pierceproductions.org/blog Brent Pierce

I didn’t do this in video mode. I took a long-exposure picture every 24 seconds.
I’ve never tried the gh1, but I love this Canon 60D. I’ve read specs of both cameras and the Canon’s seem to be better in multiple ways over the Panasonic’s. The gh2 is coming out soon, maybe look into that one. But I wouldn’t get the gh1.

Once you had a series of pictures taken with the help of the intervalometer, how did you put arrange into a movie? Did you put each picture next to each other on a FCP time-line? Can you play back your piece in the camera? Do you have software that put the images together? Can you shoot timelapse in camera mode on the 60D?

How were you able to make an actual movie?

    • http://www.pierceproductions.org/blog Brent Pierce

I brought all the pictures together in a program called MPEG Streamclip. Made a .mov out of them.

  • International_quixote

It looks great by the way!

Hey Brent, nice work. Do you know if you can do the timelapse without a remote?

    Cheers.

    • http://www.pierceproductions.org/blog Brent Pierce

No still camera that I know of has a built in time-interval feature. So, no, you can not do a timelapse without a remote.

The Nikon D5000 has a built-in intervall shooting mode: http://www.photographybay.com/2009/06/10/nikon-d5000-interval-shooting-mode/

Have you tried shooting at 3200 ISO? I wanna check the results because I’m considering buying this camera and I’m definitely going to shoot some astro time-lapse.

Also, what about the moon when you shot this? I mean, did you have a bright moon or no moonlight at all?

    Thanks!

  • Tom

Hi Brent, I also shoot with a 60d. Did you use an aftermarket timer remote or is there a Canon model available?
By the way, most Nikons do have an interval timer feature that is accessed via the menu system. Kind of ridiculous that Canon makes you buy a timer. That is typical Canon, but I do love ALL of my Canon cameras. The images and video are truly hard to beat. Nice work on your night sky!
