Thanksgiving split still

Jessie – Thanksgiving 2012

Posted on November 28, 2012 by Brent Pierce

Thanksgiving was awesome this year. I went out with my wife and filmed for about half an hour, after the turkey was devoured, and what came of it was a simple little video.

I filmed this with a Canon 60D and a Glidecam 2000. For the low shots in the grass, I flew the Glidecam upside down. I shot everything in 720p 60fps so I could slow it down in post.

My favorite part of finalizing a film is always the color grading that comes at the end. This piece was no exception. An effective color grade adds so much emotion and really sets the mood of a film and helps define what you want the viewer to experience. In this piece, I wanted a VERY warm and comforting atmosphere as she walked through the field. I also wanted most of the shots to be very bright and vibrant.

The shots of her hand flowing through the tall grass were inspired by the movie “Gladiator.” Next time you watch that movie, watch for those hand/grass shots in the flashbacks. They’re awesome.

I shot the footage in Cinestyle, and graded with the preset “Homegrown” from my free Magic Bullet Looks presets. I removed the vignette and adjusted the “curves” effect a bit.

Thanksgiving

Posted on November 27, 2011 by Brent Pierce

I spent the Thanksgiving holiday in Oklahoma at my grandparent’s house. I love it there. I took a bit of video to bring back. Didn’t plan on making anything out of the footage, but made a short and fun edit.

No matter how many hours you work a week, or how much traveling you have to do, ALWAYS spare the time for family. They need you, and you need them.

This was all shot with a Canon 60D, 28mm f/1.8, Rode Stereo VideoMic, and small shoulder rig. Color graded with Magic Bullet Looks and my Awesome Looks presets.

Issues with Magic Bullet and OSX Lion

Posted on July 30, 2011 by Brent Pierce

The Magic Bullet lineup of plugins from Red Giant Software is awesome, but apparently with the new Apple OSX Lion, there are a few issues with Looks and Colorista II within Final Cut Pro. But luckily, until they get this resolved, there is a workaround to make it work. Short answer, simply move you CTI (current time indicator).

Here’s the text from RGS’ website.

Magic Bullet Looks 2:

  • Description: On OS X Lion 10.7 with Final Cut Pro 7, Magic Bullet Looks LooksBuilder doesn’t open properly after clicking the Edit button.
  • Temporary Solution: After clicking the Edit button, move the playhead in the Timeline and this will open the LooksBuider.

Magic Bullet Colorista II:

  • Description: On OS X Lion 10.7 with Final Cut Pro 7, Magic Bullet Colorista II doesn’t update preview when the parameters of the color wheel are changed.
  • Temporary Solution: After adjusting the parameters in Colorista II, move the playhead in the Timeline and this will force the preview to update.

Guru Presets: Eric Escobar’s Indie Film II For Looks 2

Posted on July 6, 2011 by Brent Pierce

Eric Escobar has a new guru preset pack out for Magic Bullet Looks. This one, titled Indie Film II, is appropriately for those who desire the matted and slightly desaturated look of an indie film. Purchasing this guru pack will put you back $69, so you might want to make sure this is the package for you. Red Giant Software has a plethora of Magic Bullet Looks guru presets, so check them all out.

About Eric Escobar (from RGS):
Eric Escobar is a San Francisco-based digital filmmaker whose films have screened in the US and internationally. In 2005 his short film, One Weekend A Month, won an honorable mention in short filmmaking at the Sundance Film Festival. In addition to making films, Eric has worked in filmmaking software development at Apple Inc. and Adobe Systems. Eric currently works in a directors’ collective called Kontent Films, where he directs commercials and his own original work, helps develop tools for filmmakers, and blogs extensively.

Free Magic Bullet Looks presets

Posted on July 3, 2011 by Brent Pierce

Please note: You need Red Giant Software’s “Magic Bullet Looks” to use these presets.

Introducing “Awesome Looks” by Brent Pierce. This is my own Magic Bullet preset pack that I created, which I am providing to every filmmaker for FREE. In the past, I sold these presets for a small fee, but I now give them all to you, for free. (PS. Philip Bloom downloaded them a while back)

What is “Awesome Looks?”

  • 32 customized presets to use inside Magic Bullet Looks
  • Various styles, including vintage, retro, wedding, B&W’s, and more
  • Completely customizable: once a preset is applied, settings can be tweaked to your needs
  • Absolutely FREE: much cheaper than a standard guru preset pack from Red Giant Software

With “Awesome Looks,” you have the power to create a unique emotion and style in your film with a simple click of the mouse. Once you apply a preset, you’ll notice that there are a few effects in the line that are not enabled. These disabled effects can be enabled to add a different desired look.

Most of the presets are perfect for a standardly exposed shot, but not every preset works with every shot. If a preset looks a bit too harsh, you can easily pull down an effect and get it to look like you want. Some of the presets in “Awesome Looks” are a bit extreme and just for fun. But who knows, maybe someone needs to make an actor look like a hippie zombie.

Below are a couple quick video samples with all 32 presets.

This video was graded entirely with these presets.

So there you go, as you can see, “Awesome Looks” presets are great for whatever stylized shot you may desire. There is a text file inside the download that will instruct you on how to install these presets. Also, if you want to get even more stylized, check out these free film burns.
NOTE: I have heard some issues with these presets not working in Magic Bullet Quick Looks. They should work fine with Photolooks though.

Magic Bullet Looks

Posted on February 12, 2010 by Brent Pierce

I recently purchased a new plug-in for color grading called Magic Bullet Looks. There’s quite a few products in the Magic Bullet line at Red Giant Software, but “Looks” is the main one that stood out to me as being worth the few hundred bucks that it costs.

There is over 100 pre-made ‘looks’ that allow you to color grade a clip or image with just a couple clicks of the mouse, literally. Some ‘looks’ include basic B&W’s, tints, film stocks, Hollywood style, over-saturated/under-saturated, over-contrast, etc. Some ‘looks’ seem a bit too crazy for me, but with enough tweaking, and a little creativity, you can make any video clip, look COMPLETELY different, and alot more professional. MBL comes with a bundled plug-in called Misfire. Misfire allows you to add scratches, fading, splotches, etc. that is found on old film from earlier eras. Combine that with a sepia tone and a Posterize Time effect, and you can make a pretty simple yet realistic old film look inside your non-linear editing system. Read More →
