El-Salvador highlight video

Posted on July 17, 2010 by Brent Pierce

I just completed a highlight video for a mission team at my church who recently dug a well in El Salvador. The video turned out really well in the end, mainly due to the subtle filmic’ additions. You’ll see what I mean. I used a lot of the film burns from here. I used various transfer modes to achieve the effects that you see. I wanted to make it emotional, and really show that these people were living in extreme poverty, with absolutely no good drinking water. Disease was very common due to poor water. I wanted to build up to the point where they finally discovered water, and climax at that moment.

The opening title is a jpeg of white text on black, with the transfer mode set to “overlay” to reveal the time-lapse video underneath. Throughout the film, I used a long sequence of the HD films burns strung together over the clips, and used the transfer mode “add.” This gave the clips a ‘retro’ feel and brought them to life, with a little help from the ‘misfire‘ plugin, which comes with Magic Bullet Looks, to add the old film parameters. I also used many of the film burns randomly placed over different clips. I would place a film burn where I wanted, then play with the transfer modes and opacity until I got what looked good.

If you have any questions as to how something in the video was achieved, just ask.

Leaves Falling : now on Red Giant People!

Leaves Falling

Another simple preset is now on Red Giant People for your Trapcode Particular needs. Use with the text, or without it. The download .zip gives you the AE project, the preset, and images files. If using the preset in another project, just place the “leaf.jpg” in a 50×50 comp, and use that as your particle texture in Particular. The colors of the leaves are customizable, as well as size, gravity, rotation speed, etc.

PS. I figured out which font RGP uses for their logo. “Century Gothic,” I think.

Colorific!

Check out my new preset that I uploaded to Red Giant People. It’s a quick text reveal using Trapcode Particular. The particles look like confetti. Check out the sample video below.

You can change the text to whatever you want, obviously. Or, if you get creative enough, you can replace it with your logo to make it really interesting. And the best thing…it’s absolutely FREE. So have at it all you fellow mographers. Here’s the link that takes you to the download page.

Amazing PSA: Always Wear Your Seatbelt

Posted on April 6, 2010 by Brent Pierce

A while back, I ran across this PSA, advertising the importance of wearing your seat belt. I’ve watched it multiple times and shared it with many other filmmakers since. This is a very good example of how to tell a story and convey a feeling without ever speaking a single word. The cinematography and overall production is very nicely done, as well. Read More →

Free Film Burns

Posted on March 10, 2010 by Brent Pierce

With the never-ending quest for HD video to have the look and feel of film, users have gone to great lengths to make viewers feel as if they are experiencing scenes from a Buster Keaton film. One fairly common technique is the addition of “film burns” over footage. The film burn, or film flash, look typically comes from the misfeed of film through the camera gate behind the lens of a film camera, creating an accidental stylization look of red and yellowish hues on the negative and the print.
Digital video clips of film burns can be purchased from artbeats.com for a small fortune, or if you do enough digging, you can find a few good/free clips scattered throughout the world wide web. Various blogs, forums, videos, Google searches, and a little creativity have lead me to a few.

You can download the filmburns by following me on Twitter, via the link below. If you don’t have Twitter, fear not, you can sign up for the Cineblur mailing list to receive the film burns.

H.264 (19MB) Use this for most applications.

To use the film burns:

Place the film burn clip on a layer above the edited footage.
Change the transfer mode of the film burn, (screen, add, hard light, overlay, etc.)
Then adjust opacity of the film burn layer accordingly or leave it at 100%.
If your transfer mode does not key out the black, (hard light, darken, multiply) use a color key filter, and select black, and adjust the tolerance until you get what you want.
I personally favor the “add” transfer mode the most.

If the pixelation becomes an issue, mostly on the SD clips, use a blur to soften the edges until you do not see the large, digital “squares.”

You can also do some pretty creative things, like speeding up or slowing down the underlying clip to create a more believable effect. Also, try adding a “film flash” transition under the burn clip, to give a sweet effect. The “Too Much Too Soon” effects package is great, and contains an awesome film flash transition. And it’s free! I highly suggest any FCP editor to download it. Read More →

Video DSLR: video roundup

Posted on March 4, 2010 by Brent Pierce

Over the past couple years, Canon has been revolutionizing the video industry with the release of HD video capabilities in their DSLR still frame bodies. I’ve decided to post a few interesting videos, which I find the most helpful in the field of Video DSLR’s, focusing mainly on Canon’s lineup.
I will continue to add more videos to this post as they become apparent.

Precomposed

Posted on February 25, 2010 by Brent Pierce

So, the word on the street is, I am pretty miserable at making DVD menus. I can do them, they won’t be very entertaining, and it’ll take me a week to complete one menu, but I can do them. Recently, while going through some of my daily forums and sites, I ran across a post that caught my eye on DVinfo.net. It was by Jon Geddes, from Precomposed.com, and he was advertising his website that sells motion DVD menu templates that are fully customizable. I was immediately attracted. As soon as I saw the first preview, I was blown away. These menus are pretty slick. Each motion menu has its own theme, and has very clean and fluid transitions in between each menu: main menu, scene selection menu, & bonus content menu. I consider myself pretty good at After Effects, and I could probably make these menus myself with ALOT of time and creativity, MAYBE. But, with my very limited knowledge in DVD authoring and motion menus with transitions and such, there is no way this entire process would be possible. The whole package, with compositions matching various settings, (NTSC, PAL, HD, SD) and each comp singled out into a precomposed timeline, which is dynamically linked to an entirely different project, which takes the video & audio assets from a specified folder, is just crazy. Magic Bullet Looks

Posted on February 12, 2010 by Brent Pierce

I recently purchased a new plug-in for color grading called Magic Bullet Looks. There’s quite a few products in the Magic Bullet line at Red Giant Software, but “Looks” is the main one that stood out to me as being worth the few hundred bucks that it costs.

There is over 100 pre-made ‘looks’ that allow you to color grade a clip or image with just a couple clicks of the mouse, literally. Some ‘looks’ include basic B&W’s, tints, film stocks, Hollywood style, over-saturated/under-saturated, over-contrast, etc. Some ‘looks’ seem a bit too crazy for me, but with enough tweaking, and a little creativity, you can make any video clip, look COMPLETELY different, and alot more professional. MBL comes with a bundled plug-in called Misfire. Misfire allows you to add scratches, fading, splotches, etc. that is found on old film from earlier eras. Combine that with a sepia tone and a Posterize Time effect, and you can make a pretty simple yet realistic old film look inside your non-linear editing system. Read More →
